Forgive me, I'm new at this... I call this one "Why I became a chiropractor"

Hello all.  As my title indicates, I'm new at this whole blog thing...this is my first one.  My name is Libby Larson, I'm a chiropractor, and I set up this blog to help share with you all what chiropractic is to me, and the wonderful things it has brought to my life.  I'd like to start by telling you a little bit about myself...

I am 29 years old.  I graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in August 2008, so I've been in practice for just over 3 years now.  I have a small Chiropractic practice located in St. Louis Park, MN that I run by myself.  I am engaged to a wonderful man, named Rick.  We've been together for nearly 4 years and are getting married in less than 2 weeks.  We have a dog named Tatum, she's a 3 1/2 year old mutt that we believe to be a combination of Basenji, Jack Russell, and Australian Shepard.

One question that a lot of people ask me when they come to my office is "why did you go into Chiropractic?", so I thought that would be a good way to start this blog, to give you my story about why I decided to become a chiropractor.  Most people that go into chiropractic for a profession have experienced some kind of "Chiropractic miracle" or they come from a family with a strong Chiropractic background either as patients or has one or more family member who is a chiropractor.  My story doesn't really fit into any of those.

My story is a little more like a puzzle that was finally solved.

I have always been one that you might consider a nerd, especially when it came to the maths and sciences, with a personal affinity towards the sciences.  I loved school, and it was where I shined!  The way I was raised, an extensive education was expected and normal.  Going to college was really a question of should, it was more of a question of how far I wanted to go.  The idea of getting an advanced degree was just no big deal, and something I needed to do in order to have the career I wanted.

As a child and adolescent, I, like everything other kid, was searching for what I wanted to be when I grew up.  Looking back on things, I noticed a trend that seemed to follow the health care field.  I talked about wanting to be a veterinarian, a psychologist/psychiatrist, Optometrist, OB/GYN, and so on...all with the same theme, but none of them every fit quite right.  I just couldn't see myself doing any of those things for 40 years, so I ruled each one of them out, one by one.

For as long as I can remember, I have also been drawn to being in physical contact with people (not in an creepy way).  I have always loved giving back rubs, I've always loved hugs, and and I've always had an interest in the human body, with a particular interest in the back, even before I knew what I wanted...

Growing up, especially in my teens, I had several members of my family, more accurately put, every member of my immediate family, had some sort trouble with their backs...My dad and one of my sisters, in particular, had some severe back injuries, and they both received a lot relief through chiropractic.  Through their experiences, I learned what a chiropractor was, having only the understanding the a chiropractor was a doctor that helped people with their hands, through their touch.

When I was a freshman in high school, a friend of mine showed me how to do a very general, rudimentary manipulation to the mid back.  I loved, loved, loved to practice that on my friends, having no idea what I was doing or that it really had any idea that it resembled a chiropractic adjustment.

At some point, during my junior year of high school, all of these pieces came together, and my chiropractic journey started with a moment of clarity.  I don't remember what made me think of it, but I just considered, for one second about being a chiropractor.  That was all it took.  In that second, everything fell right into place, and I knew right then and there that that was what I wanted for my life...having never actually been adjusted before in my life.  From that point on, the decision was made, and I never questioned that, I just knew that it was what I was made to do.

So, there it is...that is my story of why I became a chiropractor.  I know it isn't fancy or exciting, it doesn't involve any miracles, or any wild experiences, but this is my story, and it's just the beginning.  Chiropractic has since changed my life in countless ways, more than I could have ever imagined, and have every intention of sharing those way with you!  Life is better with Chiropractic, and I'm here to tell you why.  Stay tuned...
